From Kerala to Digital Publishing
I grew up in Kerala, India, where I completed my education in commerce and later pursued postgraduate studies in marketing. My professional journey eventually took me to Saudi Arabia, where I spent more than nine years living and working, including several years in business development in Riyadh.
Living in Saudi Arabia gave me firsthand experience of expatriate life and a deeper understanding of the everyday challenges faced by people living and working away from their home countries. It also shaped my interest in making practical information more accessible through digital platforms.
In 2012, I founded KSA Expats, starting as a small independent blog hosted on Google’s Blogger platform (Blogspot), focused on providing useful information to expatriates in Saudi Arabia. What began as a personal initiative gradually developed into a broader interest in digital publishing and technology.
Over the years, I expanded my work to include UAE Expatriates, Q Expat, mobile applications, and other digital information services. These projects now form part of my continuing work through MAV Digital Media.
My journey has largely been shaped by personal experience and an interest in using technology to make useful information easier to find and understand.
The Story Behind the Villan Family Name
My family name, Villan, has its roots in the Malabar region of Kerala, India.
According to family oral traditions, the name is believed to be derived from the Malayalam word Villan (വില്ലൻ), meaning archer.
Family accounts passed down through generations suggest that our ancestors had ties to the Arakkal royal family of Kannur before settling in Kodur, in present-day Malappuram district, during the 19th century.
The Villan family has deep roots in Kodur, with a long history of agriculture and landownership. Over generations, the family has grown into a large extended community, maintaining its ancestral roots in Kodur while its members have settled across Kerala, other parts of India, and abroad.
